Breightmet is situated in the North East of Bolton, close to Harwood, Tongue Moor, and Darcy Lever. It is home to schools such as Red Lane C.P. School, Christ Church C of E Primary School, Crompton Fold C.P. School, Roscow Fold C.P. School. Any sports fan can be kept occupied by visiting Leverhulme Park, Premier Fives Sports Complex, along with Withins School Leisure Centre.

Withins School is the only high school in Breightmet. One of the last high schools prior to the border with Bury. Within the last two years, it has become one of the most improved schools of its type in the country. Granted that it is in a socio-economically deprived area, there is a genuine sense of pride amongst the vast majority of students, staff and local residents. However, a tiny proportion of the area would still benefit from further development, nevertheless, within no time at all one finds ones self in a mixture of suburban and spectacular rolling countryside with majestic views of the nearby moors and hills.

Within the short space of the last two years, Withins School's number of students achieving five A* to C grades or better at G.C.S.E level has increased in the region of 100%. The current target is for further improvement to 50%.

Withins takes pride in its Modern Foreign Languages Department, especially since the tragic death of Head of Department, Mrs. Sue Ford, who was tragically lost in the devastating Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004. The school held a memorial service shortly after Easter to honour the memory of a valued and much loved member of staff. The school now holds "The Sue Ford Memorial Garden" which is filled with beautiful flowers in memory of an amazing teacher, and friend.

The school has been visited by the Mayor of Bolton on countless occasions, and the school choir sang at civic sunday in late 2005. The Secretary of State for Education, Ruth Kelly has also visited the school, where she opened the new music suite in early 2005. Headteacher Phil Mather was invited to speak at a conference in Boston, Massachusetts and this added to the further international reputation of Withins School.
